Cash or Stocks & Shares ISA?

Cash or Stocks & Shares ISA?

Did you know there are four types of ISAs (Individual Savings Accounts) available to adults? These include Cash ISAs, Stocks & Shares ISAs, Lifetime ISAs, and Innovative Finance ISAs.*

Let’s focus on the two most common options: Cash ISAs and Stocks & Shares ISAs.

What’s the Difference?

Cash ISA

Cash ISAs are the simplest form of ISA. They offer a tax-efficient way to save, as any interest earned is free from Income Tax. However, while interest rates have improved from historic lows, they often struggle to keep up with inflation. This means that over the long term, the real value of your savings could be eroded—£1,000 today is unlikely to buy as much in 10 years’ time due to rising prices.

Stocks & Shares ISA

A Stocks & Shares ISA offers the potential for greater long-term growth, as investments in the stock market historically provide higher returns compared to cash savings. While investments can fluctuate in value – meaning you could get back less than you put in – the tax advantages of a Stocks & Shares ISA can make it a more efficient option over time. Unlike savings, which are only subject to Income Tax, investments outside an ISA could also be subject to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) as well as Income Tax on dividends. This makes an ISA wrapper particularly valuable for investments, as all returns remain tax-free.

Making the Right Choice

You can hold both a Cash ISA and a Stocks & Shares ISA, but your total annual ISA allowance is £20,000.

When considering investing in the stock market, it’s important to remember that success is more about time in the market rather than trying to time the market. Investing over the long term increases your chances of riding out short-term volatility and benefiting from potential growth.

The value of an ISA with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. An investment in a Stocks & Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital as a Cash ISA.

The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

Cash Lifetime and Innovative Finance ISAs are not available through St. James's Place.
